Pricing is the most awkward conversation in tattooing: price too low and you are selling your own time cheap; too high and you may lose the client. There is no single right number - but there is a good method for making your pricing predictable and defensible.
Hourly rate or piece price?
- Hourly rate: the safest option for larger, harder-to-plan work (sleeves, freehand, custom pieces). Decide whether design and stencil time is billed, and be consistent about it.
- Piece price: quicker for small, easy-to-quote motifs (fine-line tattoos, lettering). Even then, set a minimum price below which you simply do not take the job.
- Combination: many studios charge a booking fee or deposit that counts towards the final price - it protects your calendar from no-shows.
How to calculate your hourly rate
- Your target annual revenue and the hours you can realistically book
- Chair rent or studio rent, plus utilities
- Materials: needles, pigments, film, aftercare products
- Health and sterilization costs (autoclave, test strips)
- Insurance, accounting, software, marketing
- Your own development: experience, style, exclusivity
Divide your monthly costs by your realistically bookable hours and you will see a floor below which working simply is not worth it.
A minimum price is not arrogance
A 20-minute mini tattoo still needs the same sterilization, setup and aftercare support as a bigger piece. The minimum price covers exactly that - and it filters out clients who are only collecting quotes.
Make your pricing visible
