Tattoo aftercare guide for your clients

Step-by-step aftercare instructions you can hand over right after the session for better healed results.

40-60% of a tattoo's final look depends on healing: even the best work can be ruined by poor aftercare. A good aftercare guide is therefore not an optional courtesy - it is part of the job. Hand this guide to your clients, every single time.

The first hours

  • Remove the protective film / dermal film as instructed by your artist - typically after a few hours.
  • Wash your hands, then gently clean the area with lukewarm water and a neutral (fragrance-free) soap - do not scrub.
  • Pat the area dry with paper towel or a clean towel, then let it air dry.
  • Apply a thin layer of the recommended aftercare ointment.

The next 2-4 weeks

  • Wash and moisturize 2-3 times a day - always with clean hands.
  • Let the scab come off on its own: never scratch, pick or pull it.
  • Wear loose, clean, breathable clothing over the area.
  • Avoid: tanning beds, sunbathing, saunas, pools, hot springs and intense workouts for at least 2 weeks; no hair removal on fresh tattoos.
  • Also avoid: home remedies, alcohol-based disinfectants and random body lotions.

When to see a professional

Mild redness and light flaking are normal. Strong, growing swelling, pus, fever or pain that will not subside means see a doctor - treating an infection early is always cheaper than dealing with a damaged tattoo.

Make it your studio's guide

Adapt these general tips into a concrete guide built around your own ointment, film and method - printed or as a PDF. It looks professional and ensures no client forgets a step.
